Why Accessories are Vital

At AED HEADQUARTERS we believe the following list of accessories are vitally important in the majority of cases.  We also recognize that your specifc application will determine whether a particular accessorory  is appropriate for you.  Today, you will find Lexus, Mercedes and BMW all offering an AED as an option to go along with the first aid kit which is standard equipment.  In this particular case a Wall Cabinet would not be appropriate.  Many will spend thousands of dollars for an AED and overlook the necessity of certain accessories.  Our goal is simply awareness, the final decision always remains with you.

Wall Cabinets

  • Business / Commercial / Schools

We believe that Wall cabinets are a necessity when it comes to Businesses, Commercial accounts, Schools and Public Access Facitities.  Cabinets should be placed in highly visable area so literally everyone is aware that "you" have AEDs in your facilitiy.  We also recommend that a telephone be relaltively close to the cabinet location.  Depending on the size of the building, implementing proper signage in key area's will play a vital role. (See recommendations under signage)

While it is highly recommended that everyone check their AED on a monthly basis, we have seen cases where that simply has not occured.  All AEDs run a self check test on a weekly and monthly basis.  Some AEDs even run a self check every day.  In the event that an AED did not pass it's self test, then it will continually beep.  The beep is telling you that something is wrong.  It could be the pads, the battery or the internal electronics.  The point here is with proper deployment location you will know that something is wrong if the AED is beeping.  Placing an AED in a location that is not highly populated is a mistake.

In determining the number of AEDs within a facility one must first walk the entire facility with a stop watch and look for a key location meeting the aforementioned requirements.  Once this is done, we need to then determine how long it will take walking at a fast pace to get from the furtherest location within the facility back to the proposed cabinet site.  Our goal is one minute to a minute and a half walking at a fast pace from the cabinet to the furtherest point within the facility and then back.  Time is critical and yes, Time is Life.  Our goal is to be able to get to the AED cabinet and back to the victim within 2 to 3 minutes.  This will keep the odds of successful fibrillation in our favor.  Remember:  It takes time to prepare the victim and apply the pads.  It also takes time for the AED to analyze the victim and determine if the victim has a shockable rhythm.

We lose approximatley a 10 percent chance to try to save a life as each minute passes.  You can see that at 5 minutes were literally flipping a coin.  It's a 50-50 chance.  After 10 minutes prayer is all that's left.

The reason for recommending a Cabinet with an alarm is to insure that everyone is not only aware of an emergency going on, but to help and give aid.  Calling 911 running after the AED, starting CPR and preparing the victim for pad placement takes time.  The more help we have the better the opportunity for success.

In Los Vegas at the Casino's, due to all the camera's the staff knows very quickly when someone goes down.  They are literally at the victims side within 2 to 3 minutes.  They have approximately a 73% success rate.  Please remember that TIME IS LIFE.  We have seen AEDs locked up in a desk or closet.  Not only is this the wrong approach, I can assure you it will bring litigation if an actual event occurs and a victim dies.  Under these circumstances the only thing that can be done is to provide CPR and pray that the paramedics arrive in less than 8 to 10 minutes.  Remember CPR will not restart the heart when sudden cardiac arrest occurs.  You must shock the heart to have an opportunity to restore a normal sinus rhythm.

  • Homes

We have found that for the majority of homes a wall bracket works fine.  It may not have the astitic appearance however, it is less expensive.  We highly recommend that all family members and neighbors know exactly where your AED is located.  We encourage you to let all your neighbors know that you have an AED in your home in the event that an emergency happens to occur at one of your neighbors home.

The cabinet is available in a basic model without an alarm.  Many home owners prefer this type of cabinet instead of the wall bracket.  Some prefer the cabinet to store a first aid kit and/or oxygen cylinder.  Please consider the following within your neighborhood to determine whether a wall brackets, or a cabinet with or without alarm is more preferable:

  1. Senior Citizen homes or apartments.
  2. Size and style of ones homes.  Today there are homes larger than many commercial buildings.
  3. Overall age in the neighborhood.

Today, many home owners are having a wall cabinet wired into their security system.  For many who have an external alarm on their home this allows the neighborhood to know their is an emergency going on.  As you can see, there are many variables that may even play a part in having neighbors get together and pool their money for an AED.  An apartment complex or a small neighborhood with external alarm along with good planning between the neighbors could help everyone and also reduce your overall cost, not to mention Saving A Life.

CARRYING CASE

A carrying case affords you the opportunity to carry extra pads and batteries if you so elect depending on the specific AED model chosen.  The case also acts as a cushion in protecting your life saving investment.  Due to the design of many defibrillators not having a handle, we believe a carrying case makes sense in the majority of situations.  We heard of one senerio where the rescuer dropped the AED while running.  Her AED did not have a handle nor did she purchase a carrying case.  Fortunately, the AED did not break and functioned correctly.

FAST RESPONSE KIT

Our Fast Response Kit sometimes referred to as a prep kit contains the following items:  (1ea) CPR mask from Ambu Res-Cue with detailed instructions,  (1ea)  Razor,  (1pr) Stainless Steel EMT Sissors,  (2 pr) Nitrile Disposable GLoves,       (3 ea) Antimicrobial Hand Wipe packets and (1ea) Disposable Towel .  All of these items are placed in a "Save A Life" red canvas bag with a clip on the end to attach to your AED case.  The purpose of these items is as follows:

Nitrile Disposable Gloves- For additional protection, 2 pair of Nirtile disposable gloves are included.  One never knows the type of accident that may have brought on sudden cardiac arrest.  In the event of an automobile accident, or someone falling there is a high probability that blood could exist which is why our Fast Response Kit comes with Disposable Nitrile Gloves.

Antimicrobial Hand Wipes - Good hygiene is always the best approach.  The number of individuals assisting a victim should have properly cleaned hands.  In the event that a rescuer is assisting a loved one or personal friend where no open wounds or blood exists, it is possible that being in an extreme hurry that one may elect not to use the enclosed gloves.  At a bare minimum the rescuer should use the Antimicrobial Hand Wipes provided.

CPR MASK - The Ambu Res-Cue Mask provides a physical barrier between the rescuer and victim, eliminating direct contact of the rescuer's lips with unknowm subject.  The Res-Cue Mask promoted an airtight seal to the face allowing ventilation through both the mouth and nose simultaneiously.  An excellent mask for both Audlts and Children.  Our high quality mask may be used with the Bag-Valve Mask ventilation devices simply by detaching  the valve/filter assembly and attaching  the Res-Cue Mask to the device.

Stainless Steel EMT Scissors- Since time is critical is attempting to save a life, these special EMT Scissors are to cut the victims clothing covering his or her upper body (chest area) including a bra.

Disposable Towel- Our Fast Reponse Kit includes a disposable towel so that your able to dry off an individual prior to pad (electrode) placement.  We believe due to the many area's where a hot environment exists thus sweating occurs or helping someone who has been swimming, you must be able to dry the victims chest area.  For this reason, we elected to include a disposable towel

Razor- The razor in the Fast Response Kit, sometimes called a prep kit is like the disposable razors that men shave with.  The purpose is to shave any excess hair that a male victim may have on his chest so that the pads (electrodes) will stick.

Please keep in mind that there are specific procedures for using the above items when one receives CPR and AED certified training.  However, my concern is for those individuals who are acting as a good samaritan, or those individuals who never went through the certification training.  In an emergency one nevers knows how one might react and specifically if it's a spouse or a child.  One must always attempt to be prepared from our perspective for every conceivable senerio.  Thus planning for the worst to occur and hoping for the best.

TRAINING UNIT

Purchasing a training unit makes so much sense.  It allows one to practice over and over.  A training unit is a great item for children to practice.  Not everyone gets certified relative to training.  None of us know when we will actually utilize an AED on a victim.  It could literally be years.  Buying a training unit makes one feel much more confident and secure.  There have been a number of cases where individuals died due to no one quickly coming to the aid of a victim.  In many cases the potential rescuer didn't believe he could help someone because he wasn't properly trained and certified.  AEDs are easy to use and while being certifed certainly builds confidence and avoids panic, what is one suppose to do if no one is around to help and he or she hasn't been properly trained...nothing?

We must make children, senior citizens and good samaritans of all ages feel comfortable in using an AED.  In most cases its inconceivable that we can have everyone within an organizations properly trained and certified.  We all know that inorder to stay properly certified we need to take a CPR/AED course every year or two years depending on the training organization.  While I believe many may have good intentions, the majority will be hard pressed to keep their certifications current at all times in the future.  There will always be times when no trained CPR-AED individual is present.  From a long term cost approach and AED training, purchasing a training unit is absolutely the way to go.   Remember, when it comes to sudden cardiac arrest, the heart must be shocked.  CPR will not restore a heart from sudden cardiac arrest to a normal sinus rhythm.

SPARE ADULT PADS

We have always recommended a spare set of Adult Pads as a back up.  In the event a rescuer who was in a hurry forgot to shave the victim, whereas the pads would not stick, an extra set of pads will be necessary once the victim is shaved.  In the event a goo samaratan was in a hurry and forgot to dry the victim off prior to putting on the pads, having an additional set will insure that the pads will stick.  Assuming that neither of these scenario's occur in a rescue, a spare set of pads puts your AED right back into service with no down time waiting on replacement pads to arrive.  Simply from a pure safety standpoint, we believe as some manufacturers do that every AED should have a back up set of pads.

PEDIATRIC PADS

In the event you have children or grand children below 8 years of age or below 55 pounds, Pediatric Pads are highly recommended.

SPARE BATTERIES

Depending on the manufacturer and their battery warranty you may wish to have an extra set of batteries.  The actual shelf life is between 3 and 5 years depending on the manufacturer.  Some manufacturers offer a training pads that allow you to practice with a real live AED unit.  This approach may tend to be a little more cost effective than purchasing a training unit.  However, in this particular event where one is using a live AED unit in a training mode, we highly recommend having an extra set of batteries which should be marked "Training Battery" so the integrity of the actual battery that came with the AED useful life is not diminished.
