A portable defibrillator and quick thinking by the athletic trainer at Kent Denver High School helped saved the life of a high school basketball coach Thursday night.
The junior varsity coach for Bishop Machebeuf Catholic High School was having a problem with the electrical part of his heart. Tom Young had a heart attack 6 years ago.
Young collapsed during the game at Kent Denver. Two people trained in CPR came out for the stands to help Young.
“Last night was despair,” Joanne Young, Tom Young’s wife said. “Tonight, it’s golden here, it’s great.”
Jack Pearman, a trainer at Kent Denver went to get the portable defibrillator while the two spectators performed CPR.
Tom Young wasn’t showing a pulse until after the defibrillator was used to shock him twice.
"These new defibrillators are amazing," Pearman said.
"Kent Denver, thank you for having those paddles," Joanne Young said.
Tom Young is scheduled to have a small defibrillator implanted in his chest on Monday. He’s expected to be released from the hospital Sunday.
