AED BUYING GUIDEAEDs are expensive, so look at the overall cost for a given 5 year period of time so you can make a cost effective decision on which AED is best for your situation. As you review the various questions, please keep in mind that this is the same type of detailed approach we used when selecting the AED manufacturers we represent. TOP AED BUYING TIPS 1. Compare the length of time that a manufacturer has been in business. 2. How long has the manufacturer made AED units? 3. Will the manufacturer provide you with indemnification (liability insurance)? 4. Are there existing lawsuits against the manufacturer? 5. Evaluate the ease of use. Review at least 3 different AEDs so you can see that there is a difference. While they are all somewhat easy to use, some are much easier than others. Remember our hopes are that you will never have to use your AED. Consider your AED additional insurance just like the air bag in your car. Remember, in the event you have to use your AED many years may have gone by, so selecting what you believe to be the easiest AED to use should be paramount. 6. Compare overall manufacturers’ warranties. Read the fine print that explains when a 5-year warranty applies and when it doesn’t. 7. Does the manufacturer make their warranty difficult to understand or do they make it simple? 8. If you like the manufacturer warranty, do they offer an extended warranty? 9. What is the turn-around time for replacement of a defective AED? 10. How long will the batteries last? 11. Does the manufacturer offer a warranty on the battery? 12. What is the cost for replacement batteries? 13. What is the cost of replacement pads (electrodes)? 14. Make a good comparison between the AEDs overall size, color and weight. 15. Compare the accessories offered when you purchase an AED. Are optional items really optional or is the AED manufactured so you have to purchase some of the optional items? This can have an affect on the overall PRICE. 16. Are the voice prompts clear or confusing? 17. Is the AED for business use or personal use? 18. Does the environment where you’re deploying an AED require a visual text display? Hearing impaired individuals and noisy work environments may dictate that you purchase an AED with a text display. 19. How much maintenance is required? 20. What are the on-going maintenance issues that need to be considered? 21. Depending on where the AED is being used is it durable enough if it gets dropped? Is the overall sealing surface of the AED adequate enough to insure that the internal components will not be affected by extremely dirty environments and is it water resistant? 22. Compare the internal circuitry of each manufacturer's AED to determine if the AED checks itself. How often does it check itself and what exactly does it check? 23. CPR Feedback is also a consideration. Does the AED provide the user with prompts or auditory feedback to assist in effective CPR? 24. Does the AED offer an easy upgradable operating system? 25. How many AEDs has each manufacturer sold in the US market? 26. How many FDA violations has the manufacturer received? 27. How many product failures have been reported by a specific manufacturer? 28. How many recalls, if any, has the manufacturer received? 29. Compare leasing versus purchasing of an AED, specifically when a large quantity is needed. 30. Advantages of buying an AED from a local distributor versus buying from the manufacturer. Manufacutrers are extremely large and simply don't have the staff or the availability to build a working relationship. A local distributor values the opportunity to service you, afterall this is how he makes money. AED Headquarters will insure that service relative to pads, batteries and comparing new inovative future products is brought to your attention. Remember, a manufacturer will tell you why his product is so superior and why competitors’ products are so inferior after all, that’s what he’s paid to do. REMEMBER:
